Organizers Training Program on Labour Rights & Social Security

2-day training program on Organizers' Training program on labour rights and social security for Home workers was successfully concluded from 25-26 September 2016 at Tansen, Palpa where 36 sectorial workers/leaders participated and actively interacted in the event. Organizers have declared to expand their committees & units in the region and districts for the betterment of workers' rights. The two day program discussed about the current labour market situation, expecting their roles, challenging of informal economy and workers rights.
Objectives of Training Program were to develop Leadership at the grass root level, to build strong relationship at provincial, district and villages levels so that trained leaders could handle local issues, to work as a Social change agents at Local level Governance Institutions, NTUC so that workers as well as union could put their demands independently. The training workshop also welcomed concepts and importance of unionization, quality of organizers, importance of communication, tools & techniques and communication system at the grass root level.
The need of such trade union education and training program on labour rights and social security for NTUC's affiliate union leaders and members have been rising time and again within the organization especially targeting Western regional home workers. They said sectors workers are more deprived and working in vulnerable condition, out of social protection coverage. Due to lack of awareness about trade union education and their rights and responsibilities and access to right information these leaders/members have been getting less opportunity in the organization. To fulfill these organizational gaps as well as develop their organizational capacity, NTUC organized this 2-day trade union education and training program on labour rights and social security to the agriculture sector group. The program was organized to raise awareness amongst the potential home workers leaders and trade union members. The workshop was attended by 36 participants and all were women.
There are two folds of program one is inaugural and other is business sessions. In inaugural Nepali Congress Party president Mr. Bir Bahadur Rana, chief guest said if the scatted workers could unionize with facilitating by income generating program will help for national prosperity. Mr. Rana also added that Nepali Congress Party is ready any kind of support for the workers and their prosperity. Nepal Trade Union Congress Vice Presidents Mr. Ayodhyya Prasad Yadav and Rama Poduel also spoke about the workers' rights and importance of trade union education. Ms. Rama Panta Nepal Women Front – Nepali Congress Party, Ms. Ambika Poudel, Central Committee member NTUC and Bishnu Kumari Shrestha- district president Home worker union stressed for one post for one person. The program was chaired by President Nepal Home workers Ms. Usha Bhandari.
After inauguration and ice- breaking, the participants were given a brief explanation about the importance of training program. Following this, the participants were divided into four groups. A pre- test was taken from all participants in order to understand their level of knowledge regarding informality, formality, Leadership and Communication. The following topics were discussed on the first day of the training workshop:
Similarly, the 2nd day began with a short recap of the previous day, and the new session on Concepts of Communication. The trainers explained the types, components and barriers in communication; techniques of question. The participants were divided into four groups to do the exercise. Each group explained their presentation and received feedback from trainer. After this, next session dealt on active listening, and triangulation of listening, communication at the grass roots levels.
2nd cession was meeting. The trainer explained the definition of time meeting and its importance in the organization. The participants were facilitated to use participatory methods like. The contents include organization of meeting; the chairperson and his/her duties and responsibilities, framework of meeting, tips for effective meeting. More concentration was focused on outcomes of meeting. During this session some practical examples were given by the trainers on how to organize the meeting at the grass roots levels.
The last session was filling system. The contents included, types of filing systems; meaning of and importance of filing system; structuring filing system, effective distribution of receiving and sending official letters, system of keeping essential documents, main elements of organizing documents, some important question before discarding office documents; how to organize your office desks, how to send effective electronic message; During this session some practical examples were given by the trainers regarding the coordination, planning and evaluation. Trainers once again quickly revisited all the last day lectures with the participants.
Finally, Mr. Ayodhya Prasad Yadav expressed his appreciation and showed his satisfaction on the training. All participants were asked to share the lessons they learned with the rural people on their return to the village or work place. Mr. Laxmi Shrestha General Secretary, HWUN thanked all participants. At the end Ms. Romiyo Shrestha central committee member and coordinator of Program thanked all guests and training participants for their participation and cooperation in training program.
