Nepal Trade Union Congress was successfully concluded a street debate on the bright and dark side of foreign employment on the occasion of International Migration Day on 18 December 2023. The union met with various stakeholders on Monday morning in Jawalakhel Dabali.
Mr. Yogendra Kumar Kunwar - President of NTUC, Mrs. Rama Paudel - Member of Parliament, Dr. Dwarika Upreti – Executive Director of Foreign Employment Board, Mr. Rajendra Bhandari – President of Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA) and Ms. Bina Kunwar Thapa – Senior Program Officer in ILO Nepal office was invited as panelist in the debate.
Ms. Rama Paudel, Member of Parliament, Mr. YoIn the debate program, Rama Paudel, a member of the parliament, said that although foreign employment has done many good things in terms of improving the economic situation, the Nepali society is paying a huge social price.
She said, "Foreign employment has brought remittances, learned skills, but also created problems." Shee said that since the young people going for foreign employment cannot be stopped immediately, the attention of the relevant agencies should be paid to safe and dignified migration.
President of Trade Union Congress of Nepal, Yogendra Kumar Kunwar, said that jobs should be created for the youth in the country rather than abroad. Stating that the remittances sent by young people who have gone for foreign employment are sustaining the country's economy, he argued that the youth should not always be made migrants. Kunwar expressed his concern that even the welfare fund of the money collected from the workers is being misused in the Foreign Employment Board and said that the fund should be used only for the benefit of the workers. While mentioning that the Trade Union Congress has formed a support group abroad for the rights and interests of migrant workers, they demanded decent employment and voting rights from the workplace itself.
Executive Director of Foreign Employment Board. Dwarika Upreti has suggested to go abroad only through the legal route as there is a problem in helping and rescuing the workers who go to foreign employment through the legal route. He argued that even though there were negative comments about Ward in various media, he was always working for the welfare of workers and workers' families. The board said that it has been assisting the young generation with orientation training on safe immigration before going abroad, rescue in case of problems abroad, and funeral rites in case of death.
Rajendra Bhandari, President of NAFEA, urged the foreign employment professionals to stop mudslinging and said that creating safe and orderly foreign employment is the main interest and responsibility of the federation. Bina Kunwar Thapa, representative of the International Labor Organization, said that if all relevant stakeholders work in coordination with each other, it will be in the interest of migrant workers.
